21 Bushwick Book Club: An Evening with Malmö Musicians!

Date: Friday August 21, 2015
Time: 7:30 PM
Location: Description: Swedish Club
1920 Dexter Ave N, Seattle, Washington 98109

A Very Special Evening with Malmö Musicians happens when we host the Swedish branch of the Bushwick Book Club! We will kick off the evening with a special introduction by Swedish Professor Ia Dübois from the University of Washington!

This literary event comes with a twist—or, more accurately, two twists.

Start with a book of short stories by three writers living in Sweden. Twist number one—all three of these writers are Iranian immigrants.

And—twist number two—you won’t hear these stories read. You’ll hear them sung.

Our special guests are members of the Bushwick Book Club—a collective of musicians devoted to writing and performing songs based on literary works. The Book Club began in Brooklyn and has chapters in New Orleans, Sweden and Seattle.

Members Thomas Teller and Kristian Carlsson from Malmö will join performers from Seattle for this performance.

Seattle artists include Don Rauf, Kristin Chambers, Matt Price, Nick Droz, Jon Yoon, Aaron Shay, Debbie Miller and Ben Mish.

The book that will inspire them, Blue Swedish for Nowruz, has been published in English by Malmö’s Dracopis Press. It features three short stories from Iranian writers—Naeimeh Doostdar, Azita Ghahreman, and Nasrin Madani—now exiled in Sweden. Having left Iran for different reasons in the past 15 years, they still write in Farsi, yet have gained acceptance as representatives of contemporary Swedish literature.

Nowruz is the Persian New Year (celebrated at the spring equinox). “Blue Swedish” is a kind of duck, but also refers to blue of the Swedish flag and the blues of the dark side of Sweden’s cultural temperament, according to Dracopis Press.

Copies of Blue Swedish for Nowruz will be available for sale through the Swedish Club for $10. Call (206) 283-1090 for your copy.

Purchase the book, read the stories, and come ready to hear the songs!
